Aims and Learning Outcomes:
The aim of this training is to increase awareness and understanding of who young carers are, support professionals to identify young carers who may be hidden within families and improve understanding of the safeguarding risks associated with caring responsibilities. The training aims to strengthen professional confidence in responding appropriately to young carers in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and local processes, and to promote a multi-agency approach to safeguarding and support.
What the training will cover
This introductory session will explore who young carers and young adult carers are and the prevalence of young carers across communities. It will consider why young carers are often hidden from services and the impact that caring responsibilities can have on a child or young person’s wellbeing, education and development. The session will explore safeguarding risks commonly associated with young caring roles, including neglect, emotional harm and inappropriate levels of responsibility. Participants will be supported to recognise signs and indicators that a child or young person may be a young carer, understand professional roles and responsibilities in line with Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Children and Families Act 2014 and the Care Act 2014 (where relevant), and feel more confident about what to do if a young carer is identified, including conversations, information sharing and referral pathways. Case examples and opportunities for reflection on practice will be included.
